The mission of the After-School All-stars is to provide comprehensive out-of-school programs that keep children safe and help them achieve in school and life.

Kids who have no place to go end up going nowhere. Kids with some place to go end up going places. Every day in the United States as many as 15 million children leave school with no place to go. And every day many of these children are involved in crimes, join gangs, or experiment with drugs, alcohol or sex.

Provides comprehensive out-of-school programs that are fun for kids and also keep them safe and help them achieve success in school and life. Improves kids lives by nurturing their minds, bodies and spirits through programs that incorporate independent learning, academics and enrichment activities. Serves 35,000 youth annual through after-school and summer programs in 15 cities across the country. Has created a model after-school program for middle-school kids that can be replicated anywhere across the country.

Description:

After-School All-Stars provides quality comprehensive after-school programs to young people who need a safe, supervised educational environment from 3:00-6:00 pm.

After-School All-Stars (ASAS) has provided tremendous opportunities for the positive development for the children of our community. The ASAS believes that our Comprehensive After- School programs are the most positive investments that can help families and communities to teach kids the values and skills to become good citizens. Our programs are designed to deter children from gangs, drugs, and violence with a focus on academic success, health education and creating family involvement. The purpose of the programs is to provide a comprehensive combination of computer training, fitness, sportsmanship, life skills training, fun, art and recreation in a safe, supervised environment for children in targeted neighborhoods throughout the year. The multitude of programs we can offer allow us to promote a "sport for all" orientation, encouraging widespread participation in sports, computer education and other health related activities. The ASAS programs are targeted for children in the age range of 7-17; with the middle school population representing over 60% of our total participants.

Our program was designed with the focus on identifying student performance indicators, effective program elements and evaluation measures for after-school programs. Each of our sites is committed to providing a comprehensive after-school experience that includes our core components; Independent Learning, Academics, Physical Activity and Enrichment. Rather than being home alone or on the streets, children should be involved in positive academic and recreational activities with caring adults and positive role models whose goal is to help them achieve their greatest potential. One of the important parts of our efforts to educate every child is to make sure there are high-quality after-school programs that nurture our investment in our children and their future. We need after-school programs that are strong academically and encourage fitness and healthy habits, and our programs do that. This is definitely a need for our communities.

Program Components

Our goal is to support our participant’s school success by reinforcing school day content in a fun and interactive manner and by helping children and youth reach academic standards. One of our strengths is that our children can learn school-based content through many different paths and interests, and in many different ways. Our middle school curriculum modules are intended to enhance the educational component of our after-school enrichment programs. The curriculum has been designed to meet specific components of the national standards in English/Language Arts, mathematics, science, social studies and technology and to address literacy, problem solving, and workplace competencies. Our challenge is to effectively incorporate the curriculum into all of our program components.
